Global Human Resource Development
Nippon Express’s global network is supported by our highly trained staff member and our strengths and qualities are determined by their abilities and skill. Nowadays more than 15,000 staff members are working outside of Japan under the brand name Nippon Express. Most of them are locally hired non-Japanese. Nippon Express has been unremittingly achieving quality improvement with them for almost half a century since we first expanded overseas. We provide employees abroad as well as in Japan with training aimed at further improving the standard of quality which is the shared heritage of all Nippon Express employees.
Overseas Training System
Overview of the Training
Since 1964, junior staff members who have been with us for more than two years have participated in our practical training program. The trainees are sent to an overseas subsidiaries or representative offices for a period of one or two years. This has greatly contributed to the development of our overseas workforce. Although we initially sent only a few employees a year, we currently send approximately fifty workers to branches throughout the world every year. We train them over the long run to be able to work anywhere throughout the world, providing with such extra training as advance preparation and follow up study.
Past Participants
So far more than 1,300 people have participated in this training program. After their return they have served as important overseas personnel in various locations and some of them have gone on to become executive officers at head office.
Operations Tour for Overseas Personnel
An Overview of the System
We hold joint seminars for overseas trainees as well as Japanese employees, company facilities tours and field trips to cultural assets for the purpose of providing them with opportunities to discover and learn about Japan and Nippon Express. This activity can also generate a sort of synergy effect by bringing people with different cultural backgrounds together from around the world.
Participants Profile

Every year this tour assembles junior employees from the world over who are expected to take managerial positions. At the 23th event in 2008, more than 100 people attended the seminars. Only a dozen years ago, the majority of the participants were from Europe and the Americas. In recent years, however, Chinese employees have increased along with our business expansion into Asia regions. Although many of them still communicate in English, we now find more people speaking Chinese. Participants look forward to this event and to the challenges which lie ahead of them. We are positive that many employees have become aware of what has made the Nippon Express’ global network so extensive and strong by these meetings and discussions.
The management tour has been established as the next step for participants. This tour targets overseas executive officers. Some of the participants return to Japan in order to seek career development by attending the management seminar, which can provide them with a foothold to success.
