Forestation Activities
Activities in "Nittsu Forests" (FY2010)
Forestation activities are being carried out in the "Nittsu Forests" established in the towns of Iide (Yamagata Prefecture) and Nichinan (Tottori Prefecture); FY2010 also saw the start of activities in a Company-owned forest in Izu Nirayama. These activities are aimed at contributing to the prevention of global warming and the conservation of biodiversity through increased forestation, and at fostering environmental awareness among employees and their families. In addition, the mushrooms planted in the Iide Nittsu Forest are delivered to the residents of local social welfare facilities.
New activities pursued in 2010 include the following:
- Employees participated with local children in an Ikimono Mikke (biodiversity observation) project teaching them about the flora and fauna living along a riverbank (Iide).
- Empty milk cartons were used to transplant beech (Iide), Japanese oak (Nichinan), and sawtooth oak seedlings (Izu) and sawtooth and bamboo-leaf oak acorns (Izu) so they could be taken back and raised at the homes of participants.
- A wild bird survey was conducted and an owl nest box put up (Izu).

Activities in Hamarikyu Gardens (FY2010)
In December 2009 employees and their families began raking up leaves in Hamarikyu Gardens, which stretch out on the seaward side of the Head Office building in Tokyo's Shiodome district. These efforts were undertaken twice in 2010 (June and December), with more than 400 90-liter bags of leaves raked up each time.
