Launch of "SAT! Shanghai" Intermodal Transport Service to Shanghai, China Using High-Speed RoRo Vessel

14 January 2004

The international air service branches and offices of Nippon Express Co., Ltd began sales in January 2004 of "SAT!Shanghai," an intermodal transport service utilizing the Shanghai Super Express.

Goods will be transported from points nationwide to Fukuoka using Nippon Express' domestic air cargo services and then shipped aboard the Shanghai Super Express, a high-speed RoRo cargo vessel operating between Hakata and Shanghai.

Cargo collected from around the country will be loaded into containers at Fukuoka, leave port on Saturday aboard the Shanghai Super Express, and arrive at the CFS (container freight station) of Nippon Express' local subsidiary in Shanghai on Tuesday of the following week. This arrangement makes it possible to ship goods to Shanghai in a mere three to five days.

Until now Shanghai-bound cargo has been handled via one of two transport modes - ocean transport or air transport - and SAT!Shanghai is the first intermodal transport service for such cargo directly linking our domestic air cargo network with our ocean cargo transport services. By providing intermodal transport with easily understandable fares and a transport time on par with air shipments, Nippon Express is looking to cultivate a new market.

This proprietary intermodal transport service to Shanghai is the company's second effort to this end, the first being a tie-up with Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) for the use of 12-foot containers.
