Dedicated trains for transport of Toyota production parts increased

16 October 2007

As part of its efforts to further reduce the environmental impact of its logistics operations while increasing their efficiency, Toyota Motor Corporation (head office: Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture; president: Katsuaki Watanabe; hereinafter, "Toyota") will cooperate with Toyota Transportation Co., Ltd. (head office: Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture; president: Yasumori Ihara), Nippon Express Co., Ltd. (head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; president: Masanori Kawai), and Japan Freight Railway Company (head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Masaaki Kobayashi) in undertaking from October 22 operation of a second "Toyota Long Pass Express", a dedicated train for the transport of production parts to the Iwate Plant of Kanto Auto Works, Ltd.

Toyota first partnered with these companies in beginning transport of production parts via dedicated train in November 2006, and it will now increase from one round-trip per day to two round-trips per day the operation of dedicated trains covering the 900km distance between Nagoya South Cargo Station to Morioka Cargo Terminal Station. This move is expected to produce about 14,000 fewer tons of CO2 per year than truck transport.

Toyota also began using rail service for the transport of replenishment parts between Nagoya and Tomakomai (approx. 1,300km) in April of this year, and the company is studying a number of other collaborative approaches to reduce its CO2 emissions even further.
