Nittsu Logistics (Thailand) obtains GMS Road Transport Permit

June 6, 2018

Authorized vehicles (12) largest number of any Japanese company

Nittsu Logistics (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Kazuhiro Tazawa President), a local subsidiary of Nippon Express Co., Ltd. (Mitsuru Saito, President), has obtained Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS)(*1) Road Transport Permits (hereinafter, "GMS RTPs") from the Department of Land Transport (Ministry of Transport, Kingdom of Thailand) for transport among the GMS countries (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China) valid from June 1.

With "early harvest" implementation of the Cross-Border Transport Agreement ("CBTA") adopted in December 2016 by the GMS countries, GMS RTPs have been issued for 500 vehicles in Thailand. With 25 passenger vehicles included within this 500-vehicle allotment, 475 permits have been issued for cargo vehicles used by the logistics industry, and Nippon Express has obtained permits for 12 vehicles, the largest number of any Japanese company.

The Nippon Express Group already provides cross-border transport services within the region on the basis of bilateral and trilateral road transport permits, but these permits all stipulate in advance the countries of passage. Under the new permit system, the restrictions on countries of passage are to be eliminated in stages, ultimately making it possible to pass freely through any of the GMS countries(*2).

These new permits will also eliminate the need for the transshipment of cargo previously required at some borders, thereby reducing cargo damage that can occur during transshipment, enabling reliable and high-quality transport, and decreasing transport time.

  • (Vehicles operating between Thailand and Cambodia)

  • (NE vehicle at logistics base in Thailand)

With the Mekong region expected to see continued strong growth, Nippon Express will be developing new transport products to meet the region's diversifying logistics needs and strive to further expand its global logistics business.

  • Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS): the region straddling the Mekong River basin comprising the five countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar as well as China's Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
  • Initially there will be certain restrictions on countries of passage.
