Household-moving mistakes: trends and countermeasures

Household-moving advice from household-moving experts

Our household-moving professionals have experienced many saddening mistakes made by customers. The following are recommended measures to avoid mistakes.

Mistake 1: The house key needed to be returned to the owner, but ended up getting packed together with sea freight baggage.

During packing, our workers are careful not to pack keys and air-conditioner remote controls, etc. Nevertheless, these things can still end up getting unintentionally packed if they are inside an accessory case or mixed together with other items. Prior to the start of moving operations, please make sure to check the items that belong to the building owner, and store them in a location where they will not be packed, such as on top of a dining table, neatly arranged.

Mistake 2: The air freight ended up being significantly above the company weight limit. This was in spite of there still being room left in sea freight.

In the case of air freight, there is the actual weight and the volumetric weight (weight relative to volume), with the larger figure being the one that is used.
When baggage is packed, it becomes larger and its weight increases more than one might expect. Therefore, things that won't be necessary to you after having sent them by sea freight are best sent by sea freight. Furthermore, when packing for sea freight, it is best to have one of our Japanese supervisors check the volume of air-freight baggage one more time.

Mistake 3: The customer purchased an electric scooter and wanted to take this back to Japan, but was unable to use it in Japan due to the Road Traffic Act.

Electric scooters cannot be imported as household-moving baggage, so they need to be packed separately, and export and import expenses are charged for them. On the public roads of Japan, electric scooters are treated as motorized bicycles, so the acquisition of a vehicle-registration number and a driver’s license are needed in order to use them. In light of this, if you have purchased an electric scooter, we recommend giving it to a friend or disposing of it before returning to Japan.

Other mistakes

  • The customer’s passport was in the household-moving baggage.
▶ Please make sure that passports, airline tickets, valuables, banknotes, securities, etc. are personal effects that you have on hand.
  • The customer filled a large box with books so it became so heavy that no one could move it.
  • The customer purchased new furniture but it was not delivered to the customer’s home in time for the day of the household moving.
  • The customer mistakenly sent the unaccompanied baggage declaration form, which should be submitted in Japan, back to Singapore.
