Nippon Express has been involved since March of this year in the "Demonstration Project on the Modernization of Maritime Logistics Systems in Indonesia Utilizing RORO Vessels," a FY2015 demonstration project implemented by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the Company has now successfully completed its part in this project.
This demonstration project was designed to examine/analyze in detail the effects and issues of operations utilizing RORO vessels(*) in Indonesia for verification purposes aimed at developing efficient logistics systems for that country.
This project entailed test-transporting daily necessities and electronic goods by RORO vessel from the island of Java (Jakarta), the heart of Indonesia's economy, to East Kalimantan Province (Balikpapan), which has a high per capita income, in order to measure the effectiveness of such transport and to determine any issues that need to be addressed/resolved in future.
RORO ("Roll-on, Roll-off") vessel: a cargo vessel designed to carry trailers and other wheeled cargo and equipped with a rampway to allow vehicles to be driven on and off the ship on their own wheels without the use of cranes or other loading equipment
Following the Indonesian government's announcement that it would be constructing an efficient maritime logistics network connecting major domestic ports in order to rectify the local disparities between the island of Java and the rest of the archipelago as part of its "Global Maritime Fulcrum" initiative, this project introduced and utilized an advanced transport system from Japan, also a maritime nation. Nippon Express will continue providing logistics support to help advance the growth of Southeast Asia.
