Improving Air Transport Efficiency through a New Packaging Design for Meat Shipments

Reducing Dead Space and Meeting Quarantine Requirements with a Single Packaging Design

Customer:Food Import Trading Company

Challenge (Before)

For air shipments of frozen and chilled meat from Spain to Japan, the customer requested a more efficient packaging size to reduce dead space. Aircraft lower decks accommodate two pallet height configurations—110 cm and 160 cm. A packaging design was therefore required that used a single Euro-pallet-sized carton capable of fitting both configurations while also meeting Japanese quarantine inspection and sealing requirements.

Solutions

NX Solution

  • In collaboration with a packaging manufacturer, we designed a packaging solution compatible with both lower-deck configurations. The design also incorporated specifications required for Japanese quarantine inspections and sealing procedures for imported meat products.
  • The packaging design was reviewed and approved by both the Spanish authorities and the Japanese quarantine authorities.
  • After obtaining approval, we proposed the new packaging plan to the customer.

Benefits

Benefits (Results)

The customer adopted Nippon Express’s proposal, which reduced dead space while maintaining compliance with quarantine inspection requirements, and import operations were launched. As a result, more than 23 tons of frozen and chilled meat were successfully exported by air from Spain to Japan.
