Scheduling

When it's decided the moving….

Cardboard

It seems that there are many people who start a new life once a nostalgic return to Japan or a job assignment at a new land has been decided. We recommend starting preparations early when household moving is anticipated. Each year, February to March is the especially busy period for household moving. Even if your detailed schedule has not yet been decided, it is good to first of all receive an estimate and get an idea of the volume of your baggage.

Company Volume / Weight Limit

Ordinarily, the employer of the party that is moving will have rules regarding transport volume (sea freight: ○ cu. ft., air freight: ○ kg), the number of transport instances, and the amount of insurance coverage. Usually, if the limits are exceeded, the difference is covered by the individual. The limits may differ depending on whether you are moving alone, the number of accompanying family members, and your duration of stay, so please check your company’s rules in advance.

Example of company limit

sea freight Employee: 5 m³, spouse: 11 m³, one child: 2 m³
air freight Employee: 30 kg, spouse: 30 kg, one child: 10 kg
Insurance coverage limit none in particular
Number of shipments 2 by sea freight, 2 by air freight

※1 m³ = 35.315 cu. ft.: This is about the size of one clerical desk.

Sorting of goods

It is important to select goods according to, for example, how necessary you think the items will be to you and what your envisioned budget will be after the household move. Things will proceed quicker if you affix either the “STAY” or “PACK” sorting stickers from Nippon Express to your items.

Sea freight

Bulky items (furniture), fragile items (tableware, computers), heavy items (books), and other, non-urgent, items

Air freight

This should comprise items that you will need soon after returning to Japan (company documents, school supplies, souvenirs, etc.) but cannot carry as hand luggage. Please be careful not to include valuables in this.

Carry-on baggage

This should comprise items you will use before departure and will immediately need after returning to Japan (cash, valuables, souvenirs, etc.), passports and driver’s licenses. Free-of-charge Carry-on baggage limits differ by airline and type of ticket. So, please check when you reserve your airline ticket.

Owner’s property

Please check room keys, remote controls for air conditioner and television, instruction manuals, electrical appliances, etc. in advance.

Items for disposal

Moving is a good opportunity to organize your belongings. Please segregate and dispose your items before moving.
