We support environmental conservation by restoring sites where industrial waste has been illegally dumped and transporting contaminated soil for remediation at former construction sites and other locations.
Restoration of Sites Affected by Illegal Dumping
Initiatives to Restore Sites Affected by Illegal Dumping
Regarding the illegal dumping problem on Teshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, our company recovered 900,000 tons of waste, including contaminated soil, and transported it to Naoshima Island, where a new intermediate processing facility has been constructed.
For this project, we developed containers with excellent corrosion resistance, airtightness, and waterproofing tailored to the characteristics of the waste from Teshima Island. We also developed a specially designed truck for loading the containers and a specially managed industrial waste transport vessel, "Taiyo," which prioritizes safety during navigation.
This transport ship made two round trips daily between Teshima and Naoshima, transporting waste at a rate of up to 300 tons per day, and the transportation was completed in March 2017, after a period of 13 years and 3 months. In addition, we made suggestions regarding safety and transportation quality from the planning stage onwards for the restoration of the illegal dumping site on the border of Aomori and Iwate prefectures, which is said to be one of the largest illegal dumping sites in Japan.
Efforts to address contaminated soil
The Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act, enacted in 2003, mandates the removal of contaminated soil from former factory sites and other locations. Soil contaminated with heavy metals and volatile organic compounds at former factory sites and other locations is transported to detoxification facilities. Due to limited treatment facilities and the large volume of material to be transported, rail and sea transport are used.
