The Secret Techniques of Moving
Once you've decided to move...
Many people will be returning to their beloved Japan, or starting a new life in a new place. If you have a feeling you'll be moving, we recommend preparing as early as possible. February and March are especially busy months for moving. Even if you haven't decided on a specific date, start by getting an estimate and figuring out how much you'll be moving.
Company-restricted quota
Typically, your employer has regulations regarding the amount of cargo to be transported (○ cft by sea freight, ○ kgs by air freight), the number of shipments, and the amount of insurance coverage. Exceeding these limits usually results in personal charges. Since this depends on factors such as whether you are traveling alone, the number of accompanying family members, and your length of stay, please check your company's regulations in advance.
Example of company regulations
| Sea freight | Self: 5m³, Spouse: 11m³, Child: 2m³ |
|---|---|
| Airmail | Self 30kgs, spouse 30kgs, child 10kgs |
| Sea freight/air freight transfer | Possible |
| Insurance coverage limit | Nothing in particular. |
| Number of shipments | Two sea freight trips, two air freight trips. |
- * 1 m³ = 35.315 cft: This is roughly the size of an office desk.
Luggage left behind in Japan
We will now decide when to move your belongings stored in a storage unit and your belongings (currently stored at your parents' house) to your new home after returning to Japan. To avoid rushing during the busy period just before your return, we recommend making arrangements as early as possible. We can arrange this with our Japan branch while you are still in Singapore. Please apply using the "Application Form for Transfer of Belongings Left Behind in Japan".
- Storage unit... Please let us know your preferred delivery date and time.
- For domestic moves: Please provide the pickup location, preferred date and time for site inspection and pickup, main items to be moved, and preferred delivery date and time. This is not necessary if you will be deciding on your new residence after returning to Japan.
[Personal experience] It might be a good idea to schedule the delivery of your belongings to your new home on a different day than the delivery of your moving boxes from India. Wouldn't it be difficult to unpack all your belongings at once?
Sorting luggage
When packing your belongings, it's important to consider your lifestyle after moving and select items based on their necessity and your budget.
Attaching NX's sorting stickers, "STAY" and "PACK," to each item makes the work go smoothly.
Sea freight
Bulky items (furniture), fragile items (dishes, computers), heavy items (books), and other items that are not urgent.
Airmail
Items you'll need soon after returning home (company documents, school supplies, souvenirs, etc.) that you can't carry in your hand luggage.
Be careful not to put valuables inside.
Hand luggage
Items you will need immediately upon your return (cash, valuables, souvenirs, etc.), passport, and driver's license, which you will use right up until departure.
Free baggage allowances vary depending on the airline and ticket type. Please check when booking your flight.
Items to give to acquaintances
Overseas-spec home appliances, houseplants, items that won't fit in your new home in Japan, and items that absolutely cannot be accommodated by company regulations.
Owner's equipment
Make sure to check things like your room key, air conditioner and TV remotes, instruction manuals, and electrical appliances beforehand.
Items to dispose of
Moving is a good opportunity to declutter. It's a good idea to get rid of some things. We recommend disposing of large furniture and appliances as soon as possible.
